"For the kids" Basketball League Rules Sheet:
Clock: Games will consist of four (4) eight-minute quarters. The clock will stop according to TSSAA rules during the last minute of each quarter or the last minute of any overtime.
Jump Ball: For ages 6-9, a coin toss shall determine the initial jump ball side out at the beginning of the game and at the start of any over-time period(s). Ages 10 and up will have a regular jump ball to start the game.
Time outs: Each team will be allowed three (3) time-outs per game during regulation play. Each team will be allowed one (1) additional time-out for each overtime period. Any unused time-outs may be carried over to each overtime period.
Overtime periods: A) for 6-7 boys and girls, the overtime period will consist of one (1) two-minute overtime period. If score is tied after one (1) overtime period, the game will remain a tie. B) for 8-12 boys and girls, each overtime period will consist of one (1) minute. The game will continue until a winner is determined.
Lane violations: Five (5) seconds will be permitted inside the lane for ages 6-9 and three (3) seconds for ages 10-13.
Jewelry: Absolutely no jewelry is to be worn at any time, including plastic bracelets and “metal” hair clasps.
Defensive pressure: A) for 6-7-year-old boys and girls, neither team will be permitted to defend outside the gray box (nor in the backcourt) at any time except during the last one (1) minute of regulation play and during the entire overtime period anytime the score of the game is within five (5) or fewer points. During the last one (1) minute of regulation play and during the entire overtime period anytime the score of the game is within five (5) or fewer points, either team may defend anywhere on the court. The gray box is defined by the gray“volleyball”lines extended to the baseline on both sidelines. If the offensive team does not try to penetrate the gray box, the referee may call a five (5) second count on the offensive team. B) for 8-9-year-olds, neither team will be permitted to defend in the backcourt at any timeexcept during the 4th quarter and during entire overtime period(s) when the score of the game is within twelve (12) or fewer points. For ages 10-12, teams can press (defend in the backcourt) for the entire game when the score of the game is within twelve (12) or fewer points. Penalty (all leagues): 1st time: Warning. 2nd time: One (1) free throw and possession of ball thereafter.
Bonus free throws: A bonus (1&1 only) free-throw will be awarded starting with the fifth (5th) team foul for ages 6-9 and with the seventh (7th) team foul for ages 10-12. A double bonus is allowed after the tenth (10th) foul.
Three-point field goals: A) At the ages of 6-9-years-old, boys and girls leagues, no three-point field goals will be allowed. B) At the ages of 10-12 years-old, boys and girls, three-point goals will be allowed.
Participation rules: Each player must play one (1) full quarter from start to finish of that quarter during the first (1st) quarter or second (2nd) quarter. No substitutions will be permitted during the first (1st) quarter or second (2nd) quarter when there are ten (10) players present on the team. If less than 10 players are in attendance, substitutions are permitted in the second (2nd) quarter, among the players who played during the first (1st). Each player must play either the first half or the last half of the third (3rd) quarter. During the fourth (4th) quarter and during overtimes, free substitution will be permitted. If a player arrives at the game while the first (1st) quarter is in progress, the player must play the entire second (2nd) quarter. If a player arrives at the game while the second (2nd) quarter is in progress, the participation rule for the first (1st) half of the game only is waved for that player. If a player arrives at the game while the second (2nd) half is in progress, it is at the head coach’sdiscretion whether or not the player is inserted into the game.
Technical fouls: There will be three (3) free throws awarded on a technical foul on the bench and two (2) free throws awarded on a technical foul from the floor if on a player. Any player or coach who receives two (2) technical fouls or is ejected from the game will be suspended from the team's next physically played game.
Line-up: A written, legible line-up with first and last names and jersey numbers must be turned in to the official scorer ten (10) minutes prior to the scheduled game time.
Coaches: All coaches must be approved by the league director. A maximum of two (2) coaches will be allowed on the bench at any given time.
Basketball size and goal height: A) for 6-7-year-old boys and girls: Junior/Youth size. Goal height: 8 1⁄2 feet. B) for 8-9-year-old boysand girls: 28.5” size (women’s size). Goal height: 9 feet. C) for 10-12-year-old boys and girls: 28.5” (women’s size). Goal height: 10feet.
